International Play: U20 Lacrosse Championship Lights Up Jeju Island

The world’s best young lacrosse talent has gathered in Seogwipo, Jeju Island, for the 2025 World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championship, a landmark event that runs from August 15 to 24. This year’s tournament is particularly historic—it is the first time that Korea, and indeed mainland Asia, has hosted the competition. With lacrosse set to return to the Olympic stage in Los Angeles in 2028, the spotlight on Jeju is brighter than ever.

A Global Gathering

Originally, 20 nations were slated to compete, but Ghana’s late withdrawal brought the total to 19 teams. Despite the adjustment, the scale of the event remains immense: over 60 games are scheduled across ten days, with six to eight matches taking place daily at the Gongcheonpo Training Center. The sheer volume of competition has created a festival-like atmosphere, bringing together athletes, coaches, and fans from every corner of the globe.

The format of the championship is designed to showcase both established powerhouses and rising nations. The top four finishers from the 2022 edition, United States, Canada, Haudenosaunee, and Australia, were placed in Pool A and granted automatic passage to the quarterfinals. The remaining teams were divided into Pools B through E, battling through a rigorous play-in round to earn their spot in the knockout stages.

Action on the Field

From the very first whistle, the level of play has been electric. Day one set the tone with a highly anticipated clash between the United States and Canada, a rivalry that never fails to capture attention. While the traditional powerhouses have shown their strength, the tournament has also provided room for surprising storylines and inspiring performances.

One of the standout moments came from Jamaica, which shocked Ireland with a thrilling comeback. Trailing 4–1 early, Jamaica surged back to claim a 10–7 victory, booking its place in the quarterfinals and sending ripples of excitement through the lacrosse world. Similarly, Israel celebrated its first win of the tournament in a tight 9–6 battle against China, thanks in large part to goalkeeper Eyvatar Bahar, who made 10 critical saves to secure the result.

The knockout rounds have only amplified the drama. Canada demonstrated its dominance with a commanding 21–1 victory over Jamaica, while Australia ended Japan’s run with an 11–7 win. The Haudenosaunee kept their medal hopes alive in thrilling fashion, edging Puerto Rico 13–12 in one of the closest games of the quarterfinals. Host nation Korea has also given its home fans plenty to cheer about, pulling off a hard-fought 8–7 comeback against China in the placement rounds.

Beyond the Games

The championship isn’t just about crowning a winner—it’s about growing the sport globally. For Korea, hosting the tournament is a milestone in its efforts to expand lacrosse domestically. Matches are being broadcast locally through Soop, a streaming platform that provides full coverage and highlight reels aimed at building excitement for the sport. International fans can tune in via WL TV, which offers streaming passes starting at just $35, making the games accessible to a worldwide audience.

The event has also provided a glimpse into the sport’s future. With lacrosse preparing for its Olympic return in just three years, the athletes competing in Jeju represent the next generation of stars who may one day wear their nation’s colors on the Olympic stage. The mix of powerhouse nations, developing programs, and first-time hosts underscores how quickly the sport is expanding across continents.

A Tournament to Remember

As the championship marches toward its medal rounds, the stakes continue to rise. The intensity on the field, the passion in the stands, and the global attention on Jeju have made this U20 tournament one of the most significant in lacrosse history. It is a celebration of youth, international competition, and the spirit of a sport that is growing beyond its traditional borders.

Whether you are following live in Korea, streaming from abroad, or catching highlights online, one thing is clear: the 2025 World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championship in Jeju is delivering unforgettable moments and setting the stage for the sport’s bright future.
